The 80's revival

While researching for my recent summative brief i realized the big rise in the popularity of the 80's, in both fashion and music. The influx of 80's fashion trends have been seen resurfacing gradually in the past year, however it in the runways for this coming years fashion that the trend is even more noticeable.

In the s/s 2019 runways we can see an array of clear 80's fashion parallels, from big bows, ruffles and shoulder pads, to simply the brighter and bolder designs.

80's fashion in a word was bold, more was more and more was never enough. What became everyday fashion in the 80's is what we would interpret today as a statement, however as the images show the more these trends start to resurface, the less of a statement and more of a trend the 80's fashion quirks are becoming.

Perhaps it is the boredom with the 'classic black', and more simplistic/ basic fashion that we have embraced since the 90's that pushed designers to go the opposite way, or maybe its a reflection on our society. We have taken massive steps in the acceptance of everyone, and encouraging self expression. Although there are still struggles, it seems that now more than ever is a time be who you are, and take risks, which is perhaps also being expressed in the fashion world.

The interest in the 80's has not just been evident in fashion, but also music. Since the release of the highly successful film ,Bohemian Rhapsody, and the release of the Elton John film, Rocket man, i have personally recognized a big revival in 80's music.

It seems that the love for the music and the artists has been discovered by a whole new generation, and that the already classic songs have been played on a much wider scale. Again i feel that people have perhaps become slightly unimpressed with the type of music being released currently, with it often seeming very similar, and as a result are lapping up the fun and cheesy 80's music, where you are guaranteed to be able to belt out every word.

Personally i kind of love this 80's revival. Our generation of young people as a whole, always seem to have played it safe in the fashion department, myself included. Although we would be recreating an already previously existing trend, i think that it is a great way for us to start to be introduced back into bolder fashion, and hopefully start to become a brighter and bolder generation, that can also look back on pictures in the future and laugh at some of our fashion fails.

As for the music i don't think a classic song will ever die out completely. Although this surge of intrest probably will die down, for now im going to enjoy it with everyone else, and i believe that it was a fun addition to a night out that we didn't realise we needed.
