1st Year Summative Reflection

End of last year me…
First year is over!
To say I feel relieved would be an understatement, it is unfortunately in my nature to always feel as though I could have done more. I have however, concluded that I have done my best, and narrowly avoided a complete breakdown in the process, so overall, I’m pleased with my summative work.
I felt that I pushed myself with InDesign, a programme I was unfamiliar with prior to university, and was struggling to get my head around. Taking inspiration from the visuals of my chosen brand ‘La Bouche Rouge’, I aimed to create a cohesive visual report.
My Time management is an area I need to improve on, however I feel that most of this was due to my lack of InDesign experience, and being too much of a perfectionist with my sketchbook. Hopefully after the summer I will be a lot faster, and waste less time on creating the report, and more on the final concepts.

Me today…
I originally started writing this blog post at the start of summer 2019, but never quite finished it, in retrospect that was a good thing. Now in November of second year, I feel a lot more reflective about last year, and after recently getting the physical work back, feel that I have a lot more that I feel I could now improve on.
The fact that I tried my best in the circumstances remains true, however I now feel a lot less hopeless in terms of what more I could have done. There was a deflating feeling after hand in, I felt like I had put my all into something, that just didn’t materialise how I imagined it.
Second year has proven a lot better for me work wise. Although I still sometimes feel swamped with work, overall, I am less overwhelmed, and clear about briefs. This mindset has enabled me to begin to fill in some of the skills I was missing, which is making is more and more clear, about ways I could have made my life a lot easier in this brief.

My skills on InDesign and even Photoshop have improved, and I am excited rather than scared to expand my skills even further. Even aspects such as planning and sticking to set time frames for projects have improved, thanks to the challenging but useful short, fast phase projects in second year. I am aware that Industry works at this phase if not faster! And I now feel better equipped for still giving my best work, without being to much of a perfectionist and falling behind.
